What Treatment Approach?
My counselling approach is solution-focused, using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as the primary treatment approach.
Why CBT?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the most widely researched treatment approach in the world. The evidence base for CBT as an effective treatment for a wide variety of issues, is substantial. In particular, CBT has been recommended as the most effective treatment for Anxiety and Depression.
About Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has been in existence for over 50 years. It is a combination of Cognitive Psychology (which focuses on our thoughts) and Behavioural Psychology, which focuses on how our behaviours are learned/conditioned.
The Cognitive Model of CBT tells us that certain situations trigger Negative Automatic Thoughts, which in turn trigger reactions, which can be Emotional, Behavioural and/or Physiological. CBT theory also tells us that “between the situation and the feeling, lies a belief”. Much of the anxiety and low mood we experience is as a result of irrational beliefs. An important part of the CBT Therapy process is identifying and examining our beliefs, in order to see if they are rational (helpful) or irrational (unhelpful).
